Adding Insulation

Updated: Jun 15, 2019

When cooking with Prototype #1, we had a hard time maintaining heat in the pot. We tried to cook rice, but due to weather conditions we were unable to completely cook it, and it also took several hours to get it to that point. Our contact in Malawi, Sheillah Kamwendo, informed us that they use wool clothing or blankets as insulation to help with the cooking. Using this and information from other groups in PSC 392, we decided

to begin using a wool blanket as insulation by wrapping our pot. This simple addition greatly improved the performance of our cooking pot. We also use this insulation with Prototype #2.

These above photos are a successful test using Prototype #2 with insulation! We made mashed potatoes!

Our Prototype #1 test, which resulted in a slight failure with the lack of insulation and sufficient time to cook rice.
